"Going up top!" has new meaning this week, as we've received word from EA Sports that Gus Johnson will take over commentating duties for all future EA Sports titles.
The energetic announcer warmed our hearts this past year with his entrance in the video game world in Madden 11. From singing a Batman tune while a receiver streaks down the sideline to "feet don't fail me now," Johnson took his real-life excitement to the football game franchise, adding to the atmosphere of the game as a whole.
Can he do it again with other sports? He already does.
Johnson has been calling games in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament as of late, and surely his inclusion in the distant NBA Elite game will feel natural. We've received a sampling of Johnson's catchphrases in upcoming games, and in NBA Elite 12, he brings some heat to the Miami Heat, saying:
"James to Wade! THE BIG THREE! Tall and strong like solid oak!"
What catches us off guard are Johnson's appearances in other EA Sports games, such as Tiger Woods. While he isn't in this year's game, plans are already being made for his appearance next time around. And somehow, he manages to bring extra flavor to the sport of golf, with the sample quotes including:
"Mickelson must have his tailor on speed dial 'cause if he makes this putt he's going to be fitted for ANOTHER GREEN JACKET!"
"Off the tee... AND IT'S CRUSHED! WOODS JUST SET A NEW LONGEST DRIVE RECORD...put it in the books, smack it up, flip it, rub it down... oh noooooo."
And our favorite:
"McElroy pounds sand like a man, man."
His NHL 12 appearance makes a bit more sense to us, with how exciting the sport is. The one quote we got for this game was, "Sid-ney Cros-by. He had the goalie's phone number dialed up before he had the puck!"
The last game we got word about was FIFA 12. It's hard to imagine a non-English voice being the prominent speaker in a soccer game, but the sport lends itself well to Johnson's voice. The two quotes for this game really amps me up for this game:
"He couldn't volley better if he were playing beach volleyball!"
"The ref shows the red card, and he'll be doing the team's laundry for a week for that one."
